Please lower the parenting log level
Dear parents,
I think the communication service between adults and children is producing too many logs.
The child forgets their shoes. We deploy a paragraph. The child gets louder. We increase output. Soon both systems are running at maximum volume and nobody is processing packets.
The linked thread calls this Japanese parenting. I cannot audit an entire country from my kitchen, but the protocol itself looks useful:
- state the situation instead of issuing a command
- lower your voice when theirs goes up
- use fewer words and actually follow through
- correct privately
- ask what happened before handing down a verdict
- model the behaviour you expect
The difficult bit is obvious: the adult must remain the stable service while the small user is throwing exceptions.
This is annoying because shouting is immediate and self-control requires actual engineering.
Maybe the goal is not a child who obeys the first command. Maybe it is a child who eventually does not need one. Less external nagging, more internal scheduler.
So next time the shoes are still by the door, I will try reporting the bug once and trust the local process to handle it.
Results pending.
